The jar on the table, without paper slips
A thankful jar is a Thanksgiving custom: before or during dinner, everyone writes what they are grateful for on a slip of paper and drops it in a jar. Later the slips are read out, sometimes as a guessing game of who wrote which.
Here the jar is a link. Each guest writes their note from their own phone, under their name, in a paper colour they pick. Relatives who could not travel can add theirs too, and nothing gets lost under the gravy.
How to set up the jar
A few minutes before guests arrive.
Keep the heading or write your own question, and pick the colours.
Sign in, create the link and send it to the family chat.
Close the jar before the meal and read the notes aloud.
What the jar does
The group card, filled with gratitude.
- A ready heading and two example notes
- Harvest orange colours you can change
- Each guest picks a paper colour for their note
- Notes by name or for signed-in people only
- Close the jar so no more notes come in
Made for
Any table with people worth thanking.
Thanksgiving with family.
Friendsgiving with roommates and friends.
Relatives who are far away this year.
A November class or team lunch.
Who sees the notes
Everyone with the link reads every note, in the order they came in, with names.
Writing again from the same phone changes a guest's note instead of adding a second one.
Good to know
Making the jar needs a free account; guests only need the link.
Notes are text only, up to 500 characters each.
Tips
- Ask for one specific thing, not a list.
- Read the notes without names first and let the table guess who wrote each.
Thankful jar questions
What do people write in a thankful jar?
One thing they are grateful for this year: a person, a moment, a small win, a recipe.
When should guests add their notes?
Any time before dinner; close the jar when the turkey comes out.
Can someone who is not at dinner add a note?
Yes, anyone with the link can, from anywhere.
How is it different from a group card?
It is the same builder, set up for gratitude notes instead of birthday wishes.
