A letter to the future that opens on its day

A letter to the future, sent as a link. You write it today and pick the day it opens; until then the link shows only a sealed envelope and a countdown, and the letter itself never leaves the server.

Time capsule

Words that wait for the right day

Some things are best read later: a letter to yourself a year from now, a message for a child to open at eighteen, a note for a couple's tenth anniversary.

Write it today and pick the opening day. Until then whoever has the link sees a sealed envelope, who it is from and a countdown to the day.

At midnight on that day the envelope opens and the letter appears, with the date it was written.

How to send a letter to the future

Writing is free; an account is only needed for the link.

  1. Give the letter a title the person sees on the envelope.

  2. Write the letter and sign it.

  3. Pick the opening day: in a month, a year, five or ten years, or any date up to 2100.

  4. Sign in, create the link and send it, or keep it for yourself.

Written for

Moments worth waiting for.

A letter to yourself to open next New Year.

A message for a child's 18th birthday.

Words for a wedding anniversary years from now.

A class letter opened at graduation.

A note to a friend who is moving away.

How the letter stays sealed

The opening day counts from midnight in your own time zone, which is saved with the letter.

Before that moment the page is built without the letter's text, so it cannot be found in the page source either. When the countdown reaches zero, the page asks the server again and the letter arrives.

Good to know

The link opens at any time; only the letter waits for its day.

The letter is kept for as long as your account and the link exist; deleting it stops the link.

There is no email reminder: share the link now, or note the day yourself.

Tips

  • Write as if to someone who has forgotten today: what you did, who was around, what you hoped.
  • Put a question in the letter that only the future can answer.
  • Pin the message with the link in your chat so it is easy to find on the day.
