A birthday cake they blow out on their phone

A virtual birthday cake you send as a link. The candles really burn: the birthday person makes a wish and blows into the phone's microphone, the flames go out one by one, “Happy Birthday” plays, confetti falls and a card from you opens.

Birthday

Candles that go out when you blow

Blowing out the candles is the moment everyone waits for. When you cannot be there, send it as a link: a cake with candles that really burn on the screen.

The birthday person makes a wish and blows into the phone's microphone. The flames flicker and go out one by one, the tune plays, confetti falls and your card opens.

Build the cake yourself: one to three tiers, the sponge and frosting colours, sprinkles, berries or cream, and either a row of thin candles or the age in number candles.

How to make the cake

The cake is free to build; an account is only needed for the link.

  1. Choose the tiers, colours and topping.

  2. Pick thin candles and how many, or number candles with the age.

  3. Write the card, sign it and decide whether the tune plays.

  4. Sign in, create the link and send it. Your view shows when the candles were blown out.

What is on the cake

A small celebration in one link.

  • One, two or three tiers in your colours
  • Sprinkles, berries, cream swirls or nothing
  • Up to 30 thin candles, or an age in number candles
  • Blowing into the microphone puts the flames out
  • Tapping a candle works without a microphone
  • “Happy Birthday” played in the browser
  • Confetti and your card at the end
  • Your view counts when the candles were blown out

When to send one

Whenever a birthday happens far away.

A friend or relative in another country.

A child's birthday on a video call, blown out at the screen.

A colleague's birthday in a remote team.

A midnight surprise, sent exactly at 00:00.

A birthday you remembered a little late.

How blowing is detected

When they press the button, the page asks to use the microphone. It first listens for half a second to learn how loud the room is, then treats a steady rush of air well above that level as a blow.

While the blow lasts, a flame goes out about every tenth of a second, so a long breath puts out many candles. The sound is analysed in the browser and never recorded or sent anywhere.

Good to know

The microphone needs their permission; without it, they tap the candles instead.

Some phones lower sensitivity in power-saving mode — blowing closer to the microphone helps.

You need an account to create the link; the birthday person does not.

Tips

  • Use number candles for round birthdays — the age reads at a glance.
  • Keep the card short and personal; it opens at the best moment.
  • Send it so it arrives right at midnight or first thing in the morning.

Birthday cake questions

Do they need to allow the microphone?

Only to blow out the candles by breath. Without it, tapping each candle works just as well.

Is the sound recorded?

No. The volume is measured in their browser while they blow; nothing is recorded or sent.

How many candles can the cake have?

Up to 30 thin candles, or number candles for any age up to 120.

Can I turn the music off?

Yes. Untick the tune option, and the cake celebrates with confetti only.

Will I know when they blew out the candles?

Yes. Your view counts how many times the candles were blown out.

Is the virtual birthday cake free?

Yes. Making cakes and links is free; you only need an account to create the link.
